Stirling

Stirling, the fifth piece in the Knockderry Collection, draws its name from Stirling Castle—a symbol of strength, defiance, and pivotal moments in Scotland’s history. That same spirit is carried here, not through form of beast, but through one of Scotland’s most powerful emblems—the thistle.

Delicate in appearance yet fiercely resilient, the thistle has long stood as a national symbol of protection and pride. In this piece, it becomes the voice of Stirling itself—rooted, unyielding, and quietly commanding. Its sharp, intricate forms rise with purpose, each carved detail reflecting both the beauty and the defiance that define Scotland’s past.

Crafted from reclaimed wood, the piece carries its own sense of legacy. Every grain, every variation in tone tells a story of a previous life, now reshaped into something enduring. The contrast between the softness of the timber and the bold, spiked structure of the thistle creates a balance between fragility and strength—echoing the duality found in both nature and history.

Set against a dark backdrop, the thistle stands forward with clarity and presence, much like Stirling Castle itself—elevated, unmistakable, and impossible to ignore. There is a stillness to the piece, but also a quiet defiance, as if it stands guard not through force, but through identity.

As the fifth work in the collection, Stirling marks a moment of symbolism—where the narrative moves beyond form and into meaning. It is no longer just about what is seen, but what is represented.

Stirling is a tribute to Scotland’s enduring spirit—proud, resilient, and deeply rooted. A reminder that even the smallest symbol can carry the weight of a nation’s story.
